Peters Township and Upper St. Clair split section title

Upper St. Clair went into Monday’s game at Mt. Lebanon knowing it needed a win to claim a share of the Class 4A Section 2 title.
The Panthers got just what they wanted.
Upper St. Clair received second-half goals from Jack Gordley and Aaron Fultineer to defeat Mt. Lebanon, 2-0, in the section finale for both teams. With the victory, Upper St. Clair (10-4-1) gained a split of the section title with Peters Township (11-1-3). Both teams finished section play with 8-1-1 records.
Peters Township handed Upper St. Clair its only section loss, 1-0, on Sept. 20, and the teams played to a scoreless draw on Oct. 6. Peters Township’s lone section defeat came at Baldwin, 2-1, on Sept. 27.
Both teams are expected to be seeded highly when the WPIAL playoff pairings are announced Wednesday. Peters Township is the hotter team, having gone 4-0-1 in its last five games. The Indians host McGuffey in a non-section game tonight. Upper St. Clair is 2-2-1 in its last five games.
History bodes well for both teams. A team from the South Hills has won a title in the WPIAL’s largest classification each of the past 10 years. Defending champion Canon-McMillan and Bethel Park also qualified for the playoffs out of Section 2.
